Now Viewing: the_matrixTag type: Copyright Covers the entire series. Popular and influential cyberpunk action series created by the pre-transition Wachowski siblings (Lilly and Lana Wachowski), credited by their now dead names Andy and Larry Wachowski, and starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss. The series popularized the use of bullet time in movies, video games, and TV series. The original film debuted on March 31, 1999. It also made Australian actor Hugo Weaving, who played the main villain Agent Smith, a popular actor to cast in fantasy and science fiction movies. Due to the iconic nature of the films, certain major plot reveals are often not spoiler tagged online, so be wary of looking up info if you haven't seen them before. Thomas 'Neo' Anderson leads an uneventful life as a software programmer at a generic office during the late 1990s-early 2000s, but he can't help but feel something isn't quite right. He is particularly troubled by a word that he's seen online, The Matrix, and his curiosity compels him to find out what the Matrix is. Neo's investigations leads him to be accosted and interrogated by government Agents, but even that doesn't sway him from his desire to learn the truth. One of his online contacts, Trinity, tells him that a man and a supposed terrorist named Morpheus holds the answer to Neo's question. Neo seeks out Morpheus and uncovers the truth behind the Matrix and realizes his own place in humanity. Although it is a Hollywood production, it was heavily influenced by both anime and Hong Kong action films, with the first Ghost in the Shell movie being one of the biggest influences and was even used to help promote the movie; the Wachowski siblings are anime fans themselves and they showed the producers the anime to illustrate what kind of movie they wanted to make. Some of the shots in the original movie are very similar to shots in the Ghost in the Shell film and the series also has an emphasis on philosophy much like that film. The films also received a series of anime short side stories called the Animatrix. The Wachowskis would go on to adapt Mach a Go Go! (Speed Racer) into live action. The first film also used some of the same sets used for the 1998 science fiction movie Dark City which The Matrix shares thematic similarities with. The films' soundtrack features a mixture of orchestral music composed by Don Davis and various techno pieces composed by various techno groups, some of which were composed for the film specifically while others predate the film but were popularized by the films' usage of them. It is also for notable for giving a large chunk of its characters (particularly those who can fight) sunglasses and re-popularized giving action heroes sunglasses and long coats. Subsequent action filmmakers would also be inspired to hire Hong Kong action choreographers to help stage fight scenes thanks to the success of the films. Reeves notably befriended members of the stunt crew involved with the film such as Tiger Chen and Chad Stahelski, and would go on to work with them on other action films, Man of Tai Chi with the former and John Wick with the latter. After laying dormant for over a decade, the franchise was revived in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections, which was released on December 22, 2021. Lana Wachowski returns to write and direct the film with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hermon co-writing. Reeves and Moss return as their respective characters. While there are numerous call backs to the original, this installments has quite a few differences in aesthetic and in some of the crew members involved in production. The film forgoes the green and blue tint the original trilogy and uses a wider color palette. Lana is also working with multiple cast and crew members she collaborated with on previous works like Cloud Atlas and Sense 8, such as composers Tom Twyker and Johnny Klimek.
